Shizuka Ryokan is located just over 100km north-west of Melbourne, on a 3.5 acre property in the heart of Australia’s mineral water spa region of Hepburn Springs/Daylesford. Shizuka Ryokan is around 75 minutes drive from the city of Melbourne and just over one hour from Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport.
Shizuka Ryokan is a fifteen minute walk from the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa complex. The bustling town of Daylesford, with its art galleries, craft stores, fine restaurants and cafes, is a short 5-minute drive away.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS
FROM MELBOURNE
Shizuka Ryokan is equally accessible via two main routes from Melbourne. Each route is approximately equal distance of around 105km from the city centre. One route is via the Western Freeway heading towards Ballarat. This route passes near Deer Park, Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. The other route is via the Calder Freeway heading towards Bendigo and passes near Hanging Rock, Mount Macedon, Woodend and Trentham. The Calder Freeway route is the more scenic of the two, but involves a little less freeway travel and thus slightly more country road driving.
VIA WESTERN FREEWAY
- From the city, cross the Westgate Bridge
- Enter the Western Ring Road
- Enter Western Freeway, travelling outbound in the direction of Ballarat
- Drive approx 45 mins and pass big BP service centres on both sides
- Take the next exit to “Ballan / Daylesford” just after the BP service centre
- Follow signs to Daylesford, some 30km away
- From Daylesford, follow signs to Hepburn Springs, which is another 4km – basically, continue through the main street and follow that road north
- In Hepburn Springs, after passing Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat, see a blue sign for Shizuka Ryokan and turn left at Main Street
- Go down hill, through Doctor’s Gully and after the cutting turn left into Golf Links Drive with signs to Shizuka Ryokan and the Golf Club
- Where Golf Links Drive forks to the right towards the golf club, turn left into the unsealed Lakeside Drive towards Shizuka Ryokan, which is about 50 metres along on the left side
VIA CALDER FREEWAY
- Enter the Western Ring Road if necessary, then the Calder Freeway, or M79, travelling in the direction of Bendigo
- Drive along the Calder for approx 35 mins
- Exit on the C792 to Woodend
- In Woodend, turn left onto C317 and follow signs to Trentham and then Daylesford
- At Tylden, veer left on C317/C318
- Turn right onto C317 (to bypass C318 and Trentham) and head towards Daylesford
- At Daylesford, join the A300 then turn right at the main street roundabout and follow the C138 north towards Hepburn Springs
- In Hepburn Springs, after passing Peppers Mineral Springs Retreat, see a blue sign for Shizuka Ryokan and turn left at Main Street
- Go down hill, through Doctor’s Gully and after the cutting turn left into Golf Links Drive with signs to Shizuka Ryokan and the Golf Club

FROM SYDNEY AND NORTH-EAST VICTORIA
VIA HUME FREEWAY
- From Albury/Wodonga, head towards Melbourne on Freeway
- Take the Broadford exit (just after Seymour)
- Go through Kilmore, then take a right turn heading towards Lancefield
- Follow signs to Woodend
- Follow signs to Daylesford (C317)
- You will come into Daylesford
- From Daylesford, follow signs to Hepburn Springs, which is another 4km – basically, turn right at the main street and follow that road north
- In Hepburn Springs, see a blue sign for Shizuka Ryokan and turn left at Main Street
- Go down hill, through Doctor’s Gully and you will turn left into Golf Links Drive with signs to Shizuka Ryokan and the Golf Club
- Where Golf Links Drive forks to the right to the golf club, please turn left into Lakeside Drive towards Shizuka Ryokan about 50 metres along on left side
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Whilst having access to a car is certainly preferable to facilitate local sightseeing, some guests will use public transport to visit Spa Country. Daylesford is accessed from Melbourne by a combination of V-Line train and connecting bus services. Intending visitors can search for travel options between Melbourne’s Southern Cross station (or other starting points) and Daylesford at vline.com.au
