WELLNESS DURING YOUR STAY

Bathing and Wellness for staying guests.

A private ofuro in your room, the courtyard bathhouse at hours held for staying guests, and treatments woven quietly through your days.

お部屋の湯 — IN YOUR ROOM

Your own ofuro

Each guest room at Shizuka Ryokan features a private, deep Japanese-style ofuro bath, with serene views into your own secluded courtyard garden. Rooted in centuries of tradition, the ofuro is more than a bath — it is a practice in presence, warmth, and renewal.

In keeping with Japanese custom, guests begin with a gentle pre-bath cleansing ritual (yu-arai) in the adjoining wet room, using a hand-held shower and wooden bucket. To support this practice, we provide organic, handmade bath products lovingly prepared by our therapist using pure botanicals — shampoo, conditioner, soap and mineral-rich bath salts.

Once cleansed, step into the enveloping waters of the ofuro, designed to immerse the body fully and still the mind. Feel tension melt away as you soak, breathe, and simply be — surrounded by the quiet harmony of nature.

露天風呂 — THE COURTYARD BATHHOUSE

The Japanese Bathing Ritual

Shizuka Ryokan is the only place in Australia where you can experience the full Japanese bathing ritual in the privacy of a walled Japanese courtyard. Before entering the bath, guests cleanse their bodies using a hand-held shower and wooden bucket in a cedar-scented wet area, following traditional Japanese bathing customs. The spacious bath, sheltered beneath a pavilion, is designed for comfort and can be enjoyed alone or as a shared experience for two.

Morning and evening sessions are held for our staying guests, so the bathhouse is yours at the quietest hours of the day.

Begin by washing the body in a private cedar-scented wet room, using a wooden bucket and hand-held shower, before stepping out into the fresh air. Sink into a deep hinoki timber bath filled with magnesium-rich water, heated to 39–40°C. Let warmth embrace you as your mind quietens and your body softens.

Bathe in seclusion — and as is traditional in Japan, if you are not comfortable bathing without swimwear with your friend or family member, please book separate bathing sessions.

お手入れ — TREATMENTS

Treatments during your stay

Massage and shiatsu, facials, reflexology, and private yoga and meditation — every treatment on our menu is open to staying guests, woven gently into the days you’re here. We recommend a treatment after the bath, when warm water has softened the body and the mind has begun to unwind.

To ensure availability, treatments are booked at least 24 hours in advance — and the earlier you book, the more choice you’ll have.
